Nine things you might not know about Ibibio Sound Machine

  • BBC 6 Music put Ibibio’s latest album "Uyai" at number 6 on their 20 must-hear albums of 2017 list. Selected by Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne, Mary Anne Hobbs and Tom Ravenscroft
  • Lead singer of Ibibio Sound Machine, Eno Williams has been compared to Grace Jones with her unique style and hi-energy performances
  • Ibibio’s sound meshes African and American funk, with scrubbing guitars and a snappy horn section
  • they have toured from Thailand to Iceland and become darlings of the Festival scene
  • The band is a global coalition, the guitarist comes from Ghana, the drummer from Trinidad, the percussionist from Brazil and the saxophonist and producer from Australia, whilst Eno as born in London but grew up in Nigeria before returning to England
  • their lyrics are based on the Ibibio language from south-east Nigeria, and on stories Eno was told growing up in Africa
  • She says “for me, faith is a big thing. I grew up in a gospel background with gospel music. For the song-writing and lyrics, I thought it would be original to infuse the faith aspect, the message of hope, with uplifting music that makes people smile”.
