“I’m Old Fashioned” could have been cornetist Ruby Braff’s theme song. While trumpeters followed the trend of aiming high and fast, Braff concentrated on concision, sincerity, lyricism and a belief that there was just as much emotion in his instrument’s lower register. He adored melody and his short-lived quartet with guitarist George Barnes defined small group mainstream jazz.
