On tenor and soprano saxophones Coltrane reigned supreme with technical mastery and yet his playing was always imbued with passion, spirit and soulfulness. With his classic quartet he created the blueprint for jazz to come and with his questing imagination he expanded the music’s horizons to include world-wide influences while also turning unlikely songs into the hippest jazz classics.
