Jazz 100 - Chet Baker 12 Jul 2017

Jazz 100 - Chet Baker image

From movie star looks to being portrayed by film star Ethan Hawke, Chet Baker is jazz’s most fascinating enigma. A cool-toned trumpeter able to spar with Charlie Parker and a singer of vulnerable charm, he rose to prominence with Gerry Mulligan’s ‘piano-less’ quartet in the 1950s, then sank. His story is harrowing, his legacy mixed but his best was wonderful, lyrical, affirming.
