Vintage Jazz 20 Jun 2016
Discover the musical sound of a time gone by with vintage jazz at Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival. These 1920s and 30s inspired acts will bring their retro sound and style to the Festival for a time travelling experience of jazz and blues magic.
If you love the sound of the 20s don’t also miss Aligator Gumbo. They’re a young English band that play the sound of hot jazz from 1920s New Orleans. They’ve been hugely popular in the past and we’re expecting sell outs this year.
More sounds from the 1920s with Dime Notes. They’ll take you back to the blues drenched sounds of New Orleans and unearth a repertoire of gems of the era from musicians such as Johnny Dodds, Jelly Roll Morton and Red Nichols.
Her powerhouse vocals and inimitable rockabilly style make Davina Sowers’ Davina & The Vagabonds one of the hottest tickets in town. The singer/pianist is back from Minneapolis, with her high-energy band, for another set of rocking blues, New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, and southern gospel. She’s here for a 10-day residency so you’ve 10 fantastic opportunities to see why we love them.
The award-winning vocalist, Ali Affleck, is back at the Festival after a sell out show in 2015 with her good time, energetic vintage jazz. This year she's back with her all-star Scottish band, Copper Cats. Expect a mix of Tin Pan Alley, the Great American Songbook standards, and traditional New Orleans Blues.
And as far as vintage goes you can’t get more authentic than Bratislava Hot Serenaders. This 19-piece, hot jazz group sings the music from the 1920s and 30s with classic musicianship, period dressing and genuine style – definitely not one to be missed.
