Jazz 100 - Art Blakey image

A 1954 recording session resulted in five musicians, including Horace Silver, forming a co-operative called The Jazz Messengers. When the others left, its drummer, Art Blakey continued trading under the name and turned it into of the greatest jazz schools, a band where, over four decades, innumerable future stars conveyed Blakey’s jazz message that blues plus swing equals soul food.

Derrick Freeman plays Blakey at this year's Festival. Read more about the show here!

Watch Blakey drum up applause!
