5 Voices: Male 29 Jun 2016

5 Voices: Male image

Their vocals are as smooth as their timeless style and these male vocalists are some of the hottest tickets at this year's Festival. From the USA to Denmark, here are five male voices not to miss at this year's Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival.

He’s smooth, he’s sophisticated and he’s one of the greatest jazz singers of our age, so we're over the moon to have Curtis Stigers return to Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival. Curtis wowed us at the Festival in 2015 when he saluted Frank Sinatra in a special tribute show and now the singer/saxophonist is returning to Edinburgh with his band to deliver his sensational jazz vocals at a special gig at the Festival Theatre.

Festival favourite, Todd Gordon is also returning to the Edinburgh stage this July. He's one of the finest swing and jazz singers around and is returning to celebrate the legendary work of Tony Bennett. Expect classics such as  “The Good Life”, “I Wanna Be Around”, “Smile” and, of course,” I Left My Heart In San Francisco”. He'll be joined by special guest, Carol Kidd.

Next up we've got a singer who's got a whole host of awards under his belt, it's Mads Mathias. This Danish singer won the Danish Music Award for Best New Jazz Artist of the Year 2015 and fronts the Danish Radio Big Band and his electrifying versions of jazz standards make him simply unmissable.

Fans of The Commitments will be in for a treat because we’ve got the fantastic Andrew Strong coming to the Festival as part of Ryan Quigley Band Play 60s Soul Classics. The Commitments’ lead singer, Strong, will power his way through classics like the great songs from the era of Stax and Atlantic Records.

And finally give a huge welcome back to the Festival for legendary soul-funk heroes Average White Band. Founding members Alan Gorrie and Onnie McIntyre, front the group, to keep the flame of the classic sound alive. Expect “Pick up the Pieces", “Cut The Cake” and "Person To Person” and plenty of r’n’b, jazz, soul, Motown and funk!
