Young Scottish Jazz Musicians image

We love presenting young musicians, and this year it’s a really special year. There’s so much high quality new talent coming through on the Scottish jazz scene, we’ve only been able to feature a few of the top names. Here’s the shortlist of the gigs you need to know about:

  1. Alan Benzie Piano Playlist – the elder statesman (at 27) of the new Scottish scene is a pianist of “impeccable technique and musical imagination” ( The Scotsman – 15th July, 6.30pm, Rose Theatre Basement
  2. Fraser Urquhart Quintet  - 24 year old pianist who keeps the flame of the jazz tradition. No-one else under the age of 40 knows so many tunes. And he’s got Helena Kay on sax – 16th July, 8pm, Jazz Bar
  3. David Bowden/Charlie Stewart Band – 25 year old bass player, and 22 year old fiddle and bass player – this year’s winners of the Young Jazz Musician and Young Traditional Musician award – together in a folk/jazz crossover band full of young tyros – 18th July, 8pm, Traverse Theatre.
  4. Matt Carmichael Quartet – Just out of school, and about to go to College, the young saxophonist is a prodigious talent, with a great sound – 21st July, 8pm, Jazz Bar
  5. Fergus McCreadie Trio – the biggest start of the new scene. Extraordinarily gifted piano player, not yet 20, playing the Rolls Roye rhythm team of the new scene – David Bowden and Stephen Henderson. A must hear! - 22nd July, 7pm, Rose Theatre Basement
  6. Luca Manning – only 18, but shaping up to be Scotland’s best ever male jazz singer. Light and airy, and full of passion, he makes an extraordinary impact in the intimate duet situation with Alan Benzie. Check out the beautiful “All The Things You Are” here, and then come and hear them on 22nd July, 10pm, Rose Theatre Basement

  7. Square One – a mini-supergoup of new talent, featuring Joe Williamson (guitar) and Pete Johnstone (piano) with Bowden and Henderson in a contemporary/fusion mode – 23rd July, 8pm, Jazz Bar
