Blues Shouters 11 Jul 2017
They’re almost forgotten. The singers who could sing blues, unamplified, over a swinging band. Jimmy Rushing, Jimmy Witherspoon, Big Joe Turner, Joe Williams. Listening to them now, you realise that rock n’roll started years before Bill Haley and Chuck Berry came along. Check out Big Joe with “Shake Rattle and Roll” from 1954. Not much different to Joe’s take on “Roll Em Pete” in 1938: . Maybe the smoother tones of Joe Williams are more up your street. Here he is with Count Basie – no microphones in sight on YouTube. These were the guys that turned hundreds of heads to the Blues, including our very own maestro vocalist, Tim Elliott. So, as he says farewell to the electric blues of Blues n”Trouble, he debuts a new band with blues rhythm team, and hot horn section, swinging the Blues: TIM ELLIOTT’S BLUES SHOUTERS – catch their first ever gig – with loads of those great 3 minute hits – next Saturday at the Spiegeltent in George Square, 7.30pm. You too can Shake, Rattle, and Roll!!
