The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra: Peter & The Wolf And The Carnival Of The Animals
Scotland’s premier jazz orchestra led by saxophonist Tommy Smith deliver “a double bill that combined virtuosity and ingenuity with unadulterated theatricality … in a delightful collision between folk tale and big-band swing” (***** The Scotsman).
Winning huge critical acclaim, the programme starts with and adaptation of Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” with a Scots translation by former Makar Liz Lochhead delivered with eye-rolling loquaciousness by Tam Dean Burn.
In the second set a jazz re-imaging of Saint-Saëns’s Carnival of Animals evokes a dizzying, dazzling, zoological roundabout, with pianist, Pete Johnstone, traversing the classical and jazz genres, with the SNJO “at full power..Full of wit… and they swung. Hugely entertaining”(On The Beat).
